Sputnik V – The third COVID-19 vaccine gets approval for use in India

Bhubaneswar: Sputnik V, the Russian vaccine was approved for emergency use in India amid upsurge in COVID cases and erratic shortage of vaccines in the country.

The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) gave its nod to the vaccine at a meeting today.

Source said that the vaccine will be rolled out in India by Dr. Reddy’s, a leading pharmaceutical firm.

With the approval of an application for emergency use authorization, India may get the vaccine soon.

Currently, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved two vaccines — Covishield and Covaxin — for vaccination for the novel coronavirus.

In the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in India, the situation has worsened in a past few weeks with sharp increase in number of cases each day in many States. At a time, many States are running out of vaccine stocks, the third vaccine may bring a major relief for the union government.
