SPV formed to monitor RUSA funds at Odisha’s Utkal varsity

Bhubaneswar: A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been formed to monitor spending of fund under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) for development of quality education and research at Odisha’s Utkal University, a top varsity official said today.

Utkal, the oldest varsity in the state, is among the ten state universities across the country to receive Rs 100 crore as RUSA fund to promote excellence on the condition that money is spent by March 2020.

Utkal University Vice-Chancellor Soumendra Mohan Patnaik MBA in Rural Management will start at the second campus of the premier varisty at Chandikhol in Jajpur district from October 2.

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, who is also the Chancellor of the university, made a surprise visit to the varsity today while returning from Cuttack and held a discussion with Utkal Vice-Chancellor Soumendra Mohan Patnaik and other officials over damages due to cyclone Fani.

The Governor has also discussed issues such as steps to be taken for underground cabling, encroachment and security for students on the campus. Besides, he has asked the varsity authorities to improve the academic environment on the campus.

During his visit, the Governor advised Patnaik to take all steps to make Utkal varsity one of the top universities in the country.

The extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani, which battered Odisha on May 3, has caused extensive damage to the university’s green cover as well as infrastructure. Around 200 utility poles and electricity cables have been completely damaged inside the campus.

Earlier a university official had said that preliminary estimate suggests that the university has sustained damage to a tune of Rs 109 crore due to the cyclone.
