Stranded jumbo herd guided to safety in Odisha

After being trapped for nearly two days, a jumbo herd was guided to safety in Odisha’s Keonjhar district in the wee hours today.

The concerted efforts of forest department officials yielded results and the herd of eight elephants including a tusker and a calf was guided to a nearby jungle.

The pachyderms were trapped at an island in Baitarani river in Keonjhar district as the water level rose significantly.

The herd which was suspected to have come from the Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district entered Arendei island on Sunday night in search of food but they were marooned.

The local villagers provided paddy, coconut and bamboo leaves to the elephants till the water level receded.
