Student Congress activists clash with cops in Odisha Capital  

Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high at Mahatma Gandhi Marg here after members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) State wing had a clash with police personnel after the latter tried to prevent the activists from staging a rally protesting unemployment in the State.

However, police detained over 50 agitating activists, including student Congress president Itish Pradhan from the spot.

Sources said over a hundred NSUI activists took out a rally from Congress Bhawan here protesting against the Odisha government and the Centre for remaining indifferent to the unemployment issue in the state. Holding party flags and shouting slogans, the protestors also burnt effigy of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during the protest.

The situation turned violent when police personnel deployed on the spot tried to disperse the agitators while the latter were marching towards the State Assembly. The activists also manhandled with the cops after breaking police barricades.

Earlier in the day, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik attended the protest rally.
