Students’ union polls on Oct 12 in Odisha!

Bhubaneswar: The college campuses are getting ready to witness campaigns by the aspirants and supporters with banners and posters as the students’ union polls are likely to be held on October 12 this year.

Although, the dates are yet to be announced officially about the poll schedule, the processing in this regard has already begun by the Higher Education department.

The authorities are planning to conclude the students’ union polls before Dusshera holidays.

Sources said that a blue print has been prepared and a report on possible dates will be submitted to the Higher Education Minister soon. Following approval from the minister, the poll schedule will be announced.

As per an official source in the higher education department, like every year, the students’ union polls will be held before Dusshera this year. As all the degree colleges will be off from October 14 and universities from October 16 till 24 for Dusshera festival, the authorities are planning to complete the poll process before the dates.

The polls will be held on Oct 12 and results will be announced on the same day by 5.00 pm. The oath taking ceremony of the winners will take place next day on Oct 13. The poll processing will begin from the first week of October. ‘Why I stand for’ meeting will be on Oct 11, he said.

However, the poll dates can be changed by the minister and the authorities can cancel the polls if violence takes place on the college premises ahead of the polls, he said.

Few colleges have offered proposal to the department for selection process instead of elections. As per the proposal, the college authorities can select the representatives on consensual basis instead of holding elections.

However, the students’ union polls will not be held in Plus Two junior colleges. The security will be tightened at the colleges having both Plus Two and degree courses.
