Summer camps are here again!

With schools closing for the summer vacation sooner than was expected, parents in Bhubaneswar are going crazy trying to keep their children busy and maintaining a balance between playtime and studies. And summer camps are a perfect solution for the same!

Odisha Sun Times toured a few summer camps in the smart city and here is a list!

  1. Thumbelina:

This activity centre reverberates with happy laughter and chatter of young children who are having a ball, learning how to cook pasta from Meena Aunty, who runs this centre with Priya Budhiraja, both co-founders of Thumbelina.

 

“I have completed baking and advanced baking classes and now I have joined the ‘mixed bag course’ where I will be learning how to make cup cakes, corn tortillas, macaroni pot-pourris, cheese sticks, muffin and corn toasties,”says a proud 12-year-old Rehat Pal Singh who has been a student there since 2014.

20160426_120736Little Manvi  Singhania of  just seven years, beams proudly exhibiting her terracotta artefact that she has created with her “own hands”. She is the first student  to have  joined  this center two years ago.

Art, craft, cooking, creative writing and more is taught throughout the year, but summers, no matter how hot and humid, come with a different charm for these creative children. Additional courses like computer training, terracotta, puppet-making, and special cooking classes are added attractions .

“From 15th May onwards, we have a one-week cooking course for college-going girls . We teach them how to be self-sufficient,once they step out of home and go out to study. They learn how to make simple but delicious stir fry, vegetarian au gratin, tortilla wraps, vegetarian fried rice, mixed fried rice, vegetarian pasta, corn potato and croquets,” informs Priya.

All the courses are priced approximately around Rs 1000 – Rs 1800.

2. Happy Hours Kindergarten :

For children who are below 12 years of age, Happy Hours Kindergarten school will bring  myriad  activities from May 2 -14 in the school campus. A two-week camp, it will have sumptuous snacks with art and craft activities, fusion dance, canvas painting, nature walks, learning about flora and fauna, learning housekeeping skills so that they can be “little helpers” back home and more. There will be story-telling sessions combined with crafts which the children that connects the stories with artworks .

“We also have a ten-day camp to hone the skills of children in learning etiquettes known as Vocabloom and  Vocaboom for vocabulary enrichment beginning May 16,” said Nidhi  Dhawan, director of Happy Hours.

“Last year we had more than 100 students and this time we are expecting more. This year we shall not have the much-loved rain dance due to water shortage and have decided to teach students water conservation. We started this school in 2001 and have gained with experience,” she added .

Priced at Rs 2500for the overall course, the Vocabloom and Vocaboom is priced at Rs 1275.

3. Odisha Dance Academy:

Learning the exquisite dance steps, poses, mudras and postures of the beautiful Odissi dance, the summer camp will begin on from May 20 and continue till June 12 in Odisha Dance Academy. The training is divided into three categories: younger performer group, proficient group and established group. “Whoever is interested can contact our office and find out which group they want to join in. The charges will be according to the courses chosen and we also have facilities for food and lodging for outstation students,” informed Guru Aruna Mohanty.

4. Centre for Autism and Therapy Counselling and Help (CATCH):

For the last two years Center for Autism and Therapy Counselling and Help (CATCH ) has been conducting the summer camp  at the Happy Hours school premises. Gargi Bhattacharya from Zain Foundation said that this year they are planning a summer camp where autistic children from all strata can participate.”We are planning for extensive water activities and play therapy which the children will enjoy. The venue, date and charges will be announced shortly,” she said.
