‘Sundari’ now fit to be sent back: Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Forest department requested the Madhya Pradesh government to take back tigress Sundari at the earliest. The tigress was translocated to Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Odisha under inter-state translocation project of the country in June 2018.

In a letter to the Madhya Pradesh Forest department, the Odisha government suggested that Sundari must be brought back to Kanha Sanctuary to keep her wild nature intact.

A report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh Forest department, the Odisha government said Sundari has been preying on small animals in water bodies. However, to attack a heavy animal the tigress has to give lot of effort.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) earlier blamed the Odisha government for failure of the inter-state tiger translocation project and asked the State to return the tigress. On the other hand, the Madhya Pradesh government requested the Odisha government to inform about the health and activities of Sundari who at present weighs around one and half quintals.
