Bhubaneswar: Ranpur MLA and senior BJP leader Surama Padhy is all set to become the new Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

The newly-elected MLAs of the BJP today held a meeting, where Padhy was selected as the party's candidate for the post of the Speaker.

She then filed nomination for Odisha Legislative Assembly's Speaker post.

Padhy will be the second woman Speaker of the Assembly after BJD's Pramila Mallik.

In the recently-concluded Assembly elections, Padhy had defeated BJD's Satyanarayan Pradhan by a margin of 15,544 votes in the Ranpur constituency.

As many as 81,439 votes were polled in favour of Padhy while Pradhan got a total of 65895 votes.
