Surat rape victim not from Odisha

Surat/Bhubaneswar: In ongoing probe into rape and murder of a minor girl, who was dumped in a cricket field in Surat, police finally identified her as the victim from Andhra Pradesh not from Odisha.

Several days after her body was recovered in Bhestan area of Surat on April 6, police was probing to trace the identity of the victim.

The national media reports said that police got her identity after a person from Andhra Pradesh identified her to be his daughter.

He informed the police that the 11-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered, was missing in October last year.

Police have taken the samples of the victim’s father for DNA tests to confirm her indetity.

Police sources said that the person claimed her as his daughter showing her Aadhar Card. The body of the girl will be handed over to the person after DNA tests.

The victim had as many as 86 injury marks caused by a wooden weapon on her body when the police recovered the body from a cricket ground in near Bhestan in Surat on April 6. The postmortem report revealed that the girl was raped and murdered.

Earlier, Gujarat Home Minister PS Jadeja on April 16 said that the minor girl was suspectedly from Odisha.

“We got posters printed and suspect that she was from Odisha. However, police have no information about her family. We have contacted Odisha DGP and checked photos of more than 8,000 missing children. Besides, CCTV footage and call records of the area have been examined. We will ensure justice for the girl,” Jadeja had told media.
