Suspected deaths in Kashipur: Odisha CM orders Health Dept, RMRC to find out reasons

Bhubaneswar: Over suspected cases of deaths that recently occurred in Manuspadar village of Kashipur in Rayagada district, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today directed the Health Department and Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) to enquire and find out the reasons for such fatalities and take all possible steps to bring the situation back to normalcy.

The Chief Minister also ordered the Panchayati Raj Department to provide drinking water to the residents and construct a motorable road to the village at the earliest.

It is pertinent to mention, the five reported deaths at Manuspadar village under Kashipur block have occurred in a month. The village is in a remote and inaccessible area.

A state-level team had previously visited the village and camped there and carried out a probe, door-to-door screening, and treatment. Health teams are visiting daily and closely monitoring the situation.

The first four patients (who subsequently died) were not brought to any health facility or any health worker and were cremated at the community level. Those are suspected to be cases of Diphtheria. The pathological samples of the fifth patient (who subsequently died) were sent to RMRC for testing and were confirmed today to be a case of Diphtheria.

A prophylactic dose of the antibiotic has been given to all susceptible persons in the community.

Symptomatic patients are responding to medical treatment and the situation is under control.
