Sweta suicide case: Brother alleges torture, Rs 30 lakh demand by boyfriend’s family

Bhubaneswar: With mystery shrouding the death of software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari in Odisha capital, her family members today lodged a complaint with police alleging that she was tortured by her boyfriend Soumyajeet Mohapatra while his family members were demanding Rs 30 lakh for their marriage.

On the basis of the complaint, Chandrasekharpur police have registered a case in this connection under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and started investigation.

“Soumyajeet was torturing my sister physically and mentally besides extorting money from her, for which she ended her life. His family was demanding Rs 30 lakh for their marriage. We have mentioned it in the FIR,” said Sweta’s brother.

“Soumyajeet had kept relationship with my sister forcibly while his mother was facilitating it,” the deceased’s brother added.

Soumyajeet, who hails from Sambalpur and works with a private company in the city, will be questioned by police soon, reports said.

Sweta was found hanging inside her apartment in Sailashree Vihar area here, yesterday. Police have reportedly seized a diary from the house, in which it has been mentioned that she was in a relationship with Soumyajeet.

The software engineer hailed from Bhadrak and was working as a Technology Analyst with Infosys here.

Though the reason behind the death was yet to be known, it is being suspected that she took the extreme step of ending her life by hanging herself.
