The zonal rounds of the Young Astronomer Talent Search (YATS), organised by Tata Steel in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Bhubaneswar, kicked off at Jajpur in Odisha today.

TATA STEEL YATSRuturanjan Padhi, Head, Training, Kalinganagar project of Tata Steel launched the programme organised at Saraswati Sisu Mandir, Madhusudan nagar, Jajpur road.

Short listed students belonging to various schools located in Jajpur district, presented models on “My Manned Mission to Space“ the theme of YATS-2014. S Parichha, expert from Pathani Samanta Planetarium and other experts evaluated the models presented by the participants.

The preliminary round of Tata Steel Inter-School Quiz and Tata Steel Inter-School Art Competition, which were simultaneously organised at the same venue, evoked very good response with many students from different parts of the district participating in Quiz and art competitions. The competitions were open to students of Class VIII to Class X.

The next zonal round of YATS along with the Art and Quiz competitions for Balasore and Keonjhar zones will be held on September 19.

The students selected in 8 such zonal camps of YATS will be invited for the state level camp to be held at Bhubaneswar in December and the best 20 students will be awarded.

With a view to popularize the lasting contributions of the legendary astronomer Pathani Samanta in the field of astronomy and to spot and encourage the young talents in the field of astronomy and space science among the school going children, Tata Steel, in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium has been organizing Young Astronomer Talent Search since 2007.
