Malkangiri: The Malkangiri SP today transferred the IIC of Motu police station in connection with the third-degree torture meted out to two theft accused at the police station.
Accordingly, Motu PS IIC Somanath Dalbehera has been transferred to the district police headquarters.
Sources said two theft accused–Binod Biswas and Biplab Haaldar– of MV-81 village were detained by Motu police three days ago and subjected to third-degree torture. The two youth suffered critical injuries due to the torture and were later admitted to MV-79 hospital last evening.
Sources said, the two accused had looted gold jewellery and cash from the house of one Abhijit Biswas in MV-81 area few days ago. Suspecting their involvement in the loot, a kangaroo court was held in the village. Later, the locals lodged a written complaint against them at Motu police station. Acting on the complaint, the cops picked up the two and went on thrashing them in the custody for about three days.
Condemning the third-degree torture, family members of the accused demanded a high-level probe to ensure justice to the two youth.
However, the district SP Prahlad Sahai Meena has refuted the allegation.
He said the two were thrashed by the locals and not by cops in the custody. They handed over the accused to police after beating them taking law into their hands. Further investigation in this connection is underway, the senior cop added.
