Puri: An elderly couple of Odisha's Puri district allegedly died by suicide after being threatened by a finance company to repay a loan.

The deceased were identified as Banambar Behera (58) and his wife Banita Behera (53) of Anlajodi village under Kanas block of the district.

According to reports, Banambar had availed the loan from a private finance company. However, he was unable to repay the amount.

Last night, some employees of the company arrived at his residence and threatened the duo to repay the loan, the couple's son alleged.

The two were found hanging inside their house with rope, early this morning. They were rushed to the Khordha District Headquarters Hospital, where the couple was declared dead.

A pall of gloom descended on the village after the incident.

Police have recovered the bodies for post-mortem and initiated an investigation.
