Berhampur: A local court in Odisha’s Ganjam district today awarded life term to three persons for ‘honour killing’.

Additional District Judge-2 sentenced three persons to life imprisonment for their involvement in killing of a couple in Haladiapadar under Golanthara police limits in Ganjam district.

The incident dates back to May 11, 20014.

The convicted includes two brothers and their cousin.

It may be recalled here that Mami Nayak (20) had eloped with her boyfriend Amar Nayak, a day before her marriage was scheduled to be held at Narayanpur near Digapahandi. The family had organised a dinner where Amar’s family was also invited.

However, the bride-to-be was reported missing after the feast. The family members launched a search which led them to Amar’s house where they found her. When they persuaded her to return home for the sake of honour and prestige of family, the girl refused to give in.

The girl’s brother Niranjan along with Kalu and Budha allegedly murdered Mami and Amar.

The trio had fled to Bissamcuttack after committing the crime.
