Three more succumb to JE in Odisha’s Malkangiri; toll reaches 111

Three more children succumbed to killer Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Odisha’s Malkangiri today taking the death toll in the vector-borne disease to 111 in 67 days in the district.

The deceased were identified as Ramesh Bisoyi (3) of Kataguda village under Padia block, Muna Sodhi (1) of Sonkunda village under Korukonda block and Radhika Madkami (3) of Alur village in the district.

All of them died while undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital, sources said.

Meanwhile, a five-member team of the BJP led by Union Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reached the district this morning to review the situation. Pradhan was accompanied by BJP State President Basant Panda, General Secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra and BJP Legislature Party Leader KV Singh Deo.

Pradhan is scheduled to visit Palkonda and Dariguda villages in the district. He would meet patients at Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital and hold discussions with Health officials. The team would later submit a report to the Centre.

On the other hand, the district administration yesterday decided to undertake vaccination drive against Japanese Encephalitis (JE) after conducting a three-day door-to-door survey.

Children in the 1-15 age group will be immediately vaccinated after the end of a three-day door-to-door survey on November 20, 21, & 22, the district Collector informed.

Teachers, Anganwadi workers and Accredited social health activists (ASHAs) will be engaged in the immunization programme which will begin at 8 AM to end at 3 PM, he added.
