Thunderstorm lashes Bhubaneswar as city records first heavy rainfall of this year

Bhubaneswar: Odisha capital experienced thunderstorm last night as the city registered its first heavy rainfall of this year.

The heavy downpour caused waterlogging in several low-lying localities of Bhubaneswar while the nor’wester led to power outage in many areas.

The city recorded 76.8 mm of rainfall during the thunderstorm, which caused sudden drop in temperature by around 8.3°C. This apart, gusty wind having speed of around 60 kmph was also recorded.

The Meteorological Centre here has issued thunderstorm warning for several districts for today.

“Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, and heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur,” the Meteorological Centre forecasted.

“Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Khurda, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh, and Ganjam,” it added.

Temperature forecast: No large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) during the next 3-4 days and rise by 2-4 degree Celsius thereafter at many places over the districts of Odisha.
