Train 20 to replace high-speed Rajdhani Express; check details

New Delhi: After the success of high-speed Train 18, Indian Railways is now working on its next project Train 20- the next generation sleeper class train that will replace the Rajdhani Express trains on the network.

The high-speed train being developed under the Make in India programme is likely to be rolled out by 2020.

Details

-Train 20 will be developed at Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai

– The train will have an aluminium body. Till now, Indian Railways made use of steel to manufacture its coaches.

– The self-propelled, fully air-conditioned train will be capable of attaining a maximum speed of 160 kmph.

– The engine-less train will have CCTV cameras, diffused lighting, automatic doors and footsteps and a GPS-based passenger information system.

– Unlike the AC chair car, Train 20 will have next-generation sleeper cars.

– It will also have driver cabins at both ends.

Sources said a fresh tender will be floated with reworked conditions that would take care of the interests of domestic manufacturers. The re-worked tender has been finalised and sent to the Railway Board for approval. Once the Railway Board gives its nod, the ICF will float new tender and invite bids for the ‘Make in India’ project.

On Monday, India’s first engine-less high-speed train, Train 18, was rolled out by the ICF Chennai. The 16-coach train set was built at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
