Trapped in pond for 5 days, tusker dies after being rescued in Odisha

Sambalur: Moments after being rescued from a pond, an elephant that was stranded in the waterbody for the last five days, succumbed to illness at Saplahara village under Jujumura block in Sambalpur district today

Sources said the 17-year-old elephant, had come to the water body in a herd four days ago to drink water,  However, it got stuck in the muddy pond.

Finding the elephant stuck in the mud, locals called up forest officials of Sambalpur, Jujumura and Padiabahal for rescue operation.

Today, the team managed to rescue the jumbo with the help a JCB machine. The elephant’s body bore a deep injury mark. Later, it succumbed to illness while undergoing treatment, said forest officials.

On the other hand, the incident of an elephant’s death of and recovery of skeletal remains of jumbos from Athagarh forest division in Cuttack district is being investigated by a special team formed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).
