Tribal Tourism graduate turns successful farmer in Odisha

At a time when youth are yearning for white-collar job and sophisticated life, a graduate from Odisha decided to try his luck at farming and has set an example for others to follow.

Kshitish Chandra Mohanta took up farming in his village Dhanaghori under Saraskana block in Mayurbhanj district after graduating in Tribal Tourism from Seemanta Mahavidyalaya in 2008.

People in his locality address him as Jhantu Kalara after his immense success in bitter gourd farming.

He reaped a bumper crop last year which earned him around Rs four lakh which is a no business. His farm income is as good as a job he would have got in corporate sector.

His journey has been quite inspiring as he defied all odds to script a success story.

After graduating in 2008, he made up his mind to turn to farming with a paltry sum as the initial investment. He engaged himself in farming cauliflower, onion, potato, green leafy vegetables and earned a good profit.

His hard work and dedication paid off and there was no looking back for Jhantu. Buoyed by the initial success, he entered into bitter gourd farming. His farm now spreads over seven acres, with majority of the patch on lease.

The young farmer is now worried in the wake of distress sale of vegetables in some pockets in the state.
