Truck runs over mother-daughter duo after altercation: Odisha police

Jajpur: The police in Jajpur district today arrested a dumper driver for allegedly killing a woman and her daughter by crushing them under the wheels of his vehicle on National Highway (NH)-53 at Adhagadha over an altercation on Wednesday.

The police filed a case in this regard after taking suo moto cognizance of the incident.

According to sources, deceased Sritika Chakravarthy (47) and her daughter Sonali Chakravarthy (25) of Sukindagada were returning home on a scooter after attending the 10th day riturals of former’s father at Mahakalpada in Kendrapara.

While the duo was on their way home on the two-wheeler, a speeding truck overtook them. The duo stopped the dumper driver and had arguments which led to an altercation. Hearing about the altercation, locals interfered and persuaded them to resolve the issue then and there. However moments later, the dumper driver chased the mother-daughter duo and crushed them under his vehicle before fleeing the spot, police said.

The accused driver has been identified as Ashok Swain, cops said.

Initially, the incident appeared to be a road mishap. On being informed by the locals, police reached the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem. The police came to know about the real picture while probing the incident, sources said.

Sritika, wife of Ashok Chakravarthy, was working at Panchayat office in Sukinda while Sonali was an employee of the Union Bank of India at Duburi.
