Two killed in Meghalaya landslides

Shillong, Aug 15:

Two people were killed, three others injured and over 100 rendered homeless after torrential rains triggered landslides at various places across Meghalaya Friday, an official said.

landslideSarana Thabah, 13, and her six-year-old sister Sathi Thabah were killed when a landslide buried their house at Mawdngung village. Three men were rescued from the debris of a collapsed wall in Shillong, District Magistrate East Khasi Hills Sanjay Goyal told IANS.

The injured have been admitted to a civil hospital.

Over 100 people were rendered homeless after the Wah Umkhrah river submerged some localities in Shillong.

“At least 105 people have been displaced by the flash flood in Pynthorumkhrah area after the Wah Umkhrah river was in spate following torrential rain in the last few days,” Goyal said.

Goyal said the displaced people have been temporarily accommodated at a community hall adjacent to the Shillong golf course.

“We have geared up to provide relief to the affected people,” he said.

The North Eastern Space Application Centre has issued an alert over likely floods in the plains of West Garo Hills district, particularly in Phulbari areas after fears about a drastic rise in the water level of the Jinjiram, Demring and Jinari rivers.
