Bhubaneswar: The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Bhubaneswar Zonal Unit arrested two persons for allegedly availing fake Input Tax Credit to the extent of Rs 6.89 crore on the strength of fake invoices.

Shyam Bihari Gupta and Abhishek Gupta were involved in a fraudulent scheme of things by means of which they availed fake input tax credit of Rs 6.89 crore without receipt of any goods or services through fake invoices to the tune of approximately Rs 40 crore.

The duo was arrested on January 12 and produced before the Sub-Divisional Jurisdictional Magistrate, Bhubaneswar which sent the two persons to the judicial custody for 14 days.

The arrests were made after carrying out a detailed investigation and conducting searches at several premises to gather incriminating evidence, revealing their active involvement in the fraudulent activities, the DGGI said in a statement.

Presently DGGI, Bhubaneswar has initiated a drive to unearth GST evasion and break the chain of fake invoicing fraud. Under this drive since November 9, 2020, cases have been booked against 90 business entities involving fake invoicing to the extent of Rs 1,590 crore and seven individuals have been arrested in last two months, said Debashish Sahu, Additional Director General, DGGI, Bhubaneswar Zonal Unit.
