Two more petitions filed in SC for holding of Ratha Jatra in Puri

Bhubaneswar:  After the Supreme Court of India ordered to cancel ensuing Ratha Jatra of Lord Jagannath this year in view of possible spread of COVID-19, two more review petitions have been filed in the apex court seeking reconsideration of the order.

The two petitions have been filed by one Bijan Paikaray and another person namely Sanjeeb Chinnara appealing to the court for modification in the present order and allow to conduct Ratha Jatra only in Puri scheduled on June 23 by enforcing a complete shutdown in the town if required during the event.

Yesterday, one petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking partial change in the court’s order. The petitioner Aftab Hossen from Nayagarh district prayed the court to enforce complete shutdown during the conduct of the rituals in the pilgrim town.

He has also requested for conducting of Ratha Jatra in Puri town only, as the apex court in its order had disallowed Ratha Jatra in Odisha.

The first writ petition will be enlisted for hearing on Monday, said advocate Pranaya Kumar Mohapatra.

On Thursday, the apex court on a plea filed by Odisha Vikash Parishad had directed the State Government to cancel Ratha Jatra and all the rituals related to the event with immediate effect due to COVID-19 pandemic. The order evoked sharp reactions from across the world. Even the State Government faced flak from opposition Congress after the State Cabinet decided to abide by  the Supreme Court’s order.

The plea filed by the Odisha-based rights organisation claimed that presently the entire nation including Odisha is facing an unprecedented situation due to COVID-19, where the human lives are at a greater risk.
