Two workers engaged in sewerage work die of asphyxiation in Cuttack

Cuttack: In a tragic incident, two died of asphyxiation while another is undergoing treatment in critical condition after being trapped in a sewage tank in CDA-10 area here today.

The deceased have been identified as P Shankar of Cuttack city and Bishnu Nayak of Badamba area.  The three were engaged in sewerage work when the mishap took place at around 11 AM today.

Reportedly, one of the workers first got trapped around 15-feet-deep inside the sewage tank, following which his co-worker went inside to rescue him. When both of them did not return till long, the third worker moved inside to find them. When no one came out, locals called up a firefighting team. The fire personnel rescued the three and  sent all of them to SCB Medical College and Hospital here.

However, two of them died while undergoing treatment while condition of another identified as T Shiva is critical. 

Taking cognizance of the incident, Housing and Urban Development Department directed Cuttack Tehsildar and CMC Deputy Enforcement Officer for a joint probe into the incident.

Earlier last month,  two workers engaged in the maintenance of sewage tanks in Bhubaneswar died of asphyxiation.
