Two-year jail term, Rs 7,000 fine for Odisha doctor

Nimapada: Taking stringent action against illegal sex determination and abortion,  the Court of Nimapada Judicial Magistrate of the First Class (JMFC) yesterday sentenced an obstetrician and gynaecologist to two years of imprisonment

The Court also slapped a fine of Rs 7,000 on Dr Bachaspati Dash for the offence. 

As per information, Dr Dash had obtained license from the state Health Department for conducting ultrasound at his clinic ‘Family Health Research Centre’ at Jayashree Chhak here. However, there had been allegations against him for conducting sex determination and abortion of expectant mothers at the clinic.

In 2004, the then Puri Sub-Collector Udhav Charan Majhi and the CDMO  had conducted a raid and seized all medical equipment from the clinic. A case was also lodged in connection with the case.

Yesterday, the court convicted the doctor in the case and awarded two years of imprisonment to him.
