Ujjwala scam: Complaint lodged against gas agency owner in Odisha

Kendrapara: A massive scam was reported in Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) with allegation over fake LPG connections to poor woman beneficiaries in Odisha.

A written complaint was lodged against an Indane gas agency owner at Rajnagar Police Station after the scam was first reported in a leading vernacular Daily ‘Sambad’.

As per the complaint by Umesh Chandra Swain of Kani village in Mahulia panchayat under Rajnagar block in Kendrapara district, the official record shows that a gas connection with consumer number 7056402451 was given to his wife Shantilata Swain under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala scheme on August 26, 2017 through a loan.

However, the fact is Shantilata had never applied for LPG connection under the scheme and someone else is getting benefits in her name, Swain alleged.

Shockingly, the Indane gas distributor was allegedly using AHL TIN number of a poor beneficiary of Loisinga area in Balangir district to provide LPG refilled cylinder, chullah, pipe and regulators in name of Shantilata.

According to reports, the complainant Swain is a taxpayer and has LPG connection since 1994.

The LPG scam was alleged at the police station and further action will be taken after discussing with senior officials, said Rajnagar IIC Sukant Kumar Patra.

Notably, the PMUY was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2016 to provide LPG connections to poor households deprived of cooking gas across the country.
