Undertrial prisoner dies by suicide in Baripada circle jail in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj

Baripada: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) allegedly died by suicide last evening in Baripada circle jail of this town in Mayurbhanj district.

The deceased was identified as 21-year-old Rabi Singh, who belonged to Mahulia village under Sadar police limits in Baripada.

According to an official source, Rabi was previously arrested by the Excise personnel on December 20 in an illegal bootlegging case and was subsequently lodged in jail.

Since his imprisonment, UTP Rabi had been remaining silent most of the time. However, it has not been ascertained why he took the extreme step, the source added.

Rabi went to a secluded place at the backside of the jail last evening and allegedly hanged himself with the help of a towel leading to his untimely death.

On being informed about the death, a team of Bhanjapur police registered a case in this connection (1/2024) and initiated a probe, which is underway. Police have seized Rabi’s body and sent it to hospital for post-mortem and a report is still awaited.
