Unemployment on the rise in Odisha with around 3 lakh jobless graduates

Bhubaneswar: The total number of jobless youths in Odisha has increased over the last three years and the number of unemployed graduates in the State during this period reached 2,98,933, Skill Development & Technical Education Minister Pritiranjan Gharai informed today.

Between 2019 and 2023, about 11,06,536 unemployed youths had registered their names in different employment exchanges and are waiting for jobs, the Minister said replying to a query of Rajnagar BJD MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo on the Floor of Odisha Assembly during its Monsoon Session.

On the contrary, the number of youths who got employment during this period is very marginal.

In 2019, only 1,053 jobseekers were employed in different government offices. Similarly, only 83 youths were given jobs in 2020; about 172 in 2021; 59 in 2022; and 499 in 2023 so far.

Notably, 1,75,359 youths had registered their names in 2019; 60,976 jobseekers in 2020; 1,59,650 in 2021; 1,68,629 in 2022; and 3,55,268 in 2023 as of date, the Minister added in his reply.
