Loss in Ganjam alone Rs 1, 550 cr, Union Home secy told

Union Home secretary Anil Goswami, who is on a day’s visit to the state to make on-the-spot assessment of the damage wrought by Cyclone Phailin and the resultant flood in the state, was on Sunday told that the loss public property in Ganjam district alone is Rs 1550.

“The district collector informed that the loss to public property in cyclone-hit district alone stood at Rs 1550cr. This is the preliminary report and the actual loss could be more. The administration would soon submit a detailed assessment of the loss,” said Goswami after reviewing the situationin the cyclone ravaged district.
Goswami was accompanied by state Home secretary Bipin Saxena and DGP Prakash Mishra during his visit.
The Home secretary informed that about 2.40 lakh houses in the district have been damaged in the cyclone. He also visited Berhampur University and asked the collector to submit a detailed report about the damage caused to the university.

He has asked the government to prepare a detailed report of the loss and submit it soon before the Centre for taking further action.

Goswami will review the ongoing relief and restoration works in the cyclone and flood-hit districts before returning back to Delhi in the evening, said an official.

About 1.2 crore people in 17 districts of the state have been affected by the cyclone and subsequent floods, according to government data. 44 persons have died following the nature’s fury.
