Unique wedding: Bride reaches in-laws’ house in bullock cart in Odisha’s Ganjam

Bhubaneswar: A wedding ceremony at Bankatara village under Jagannathprasad block in Ganjam district of Odisha has drawn the attention of many due to its uniqueness.

While the bride reached the wedding venue in her in-laws’ village in a bullock cart, the groom rode a horse during the customary procession in his locality, villagers said.

Mahendra Nayak of Bankatara and Sarita of nearby Patarapalli were classmates. Both Mahendra and Sarita were successful in getting jobs in the capital city here after completing their college education.

The duo planned to tie the knot and sought the permission of their respective families.

After due consent from their family members, the wedding was scheduled for March 8.

To make the wedding a memorable event, Mahendra had decided to hire a bullock cart from a nearby village to bring Sarita to the wedding venue. Mahendra and his friends decorated the bullock cart with a bamboo-made hood and flowers, villagers said.

“I had listened that brides were earlier travelling in bullock carts to reach their in-laws’ house. So, I decided to hire a bullock cart to bring Sarita to our village for this special occasion,” said Mahendra.

Mahendra himself rode a horse during the wedding procession at Bankatara.

“This wedding ceremony has attracted the attention of many people in our locality due to its uniqueness. The family members of Mahendra and Sarita are very much happy for the couple’s unique choice for the special occasion,” said a villager.
