UP bride calls off wedding after groom fails to read newspaper without glasses

Bhubaneswar/Auraiya: In what could only be described as a bizarre incident, a bride in Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh called off her wedding because the groom could not read the newspaper without wearing his glasses.

To further stress their displeasure, the bride’s family also registered a case against the groom and his family.

The bride, Archana, from Jamalpur village, was all set to tie the knot with Shivam, a resident of Banshi village. Until the day of the wedding, the bride’s family was unaware of Shivam’s poor eyesight.

When the bride’s family saw Shivam spend a better part of the fay wearing spectacles, they grew suspicious and tasked him with reading a newspaper without wearing his glasses.

Shivam failed the test following which the bride’s family cancelled the wedding.

“I had no idea that the groom’s eyesight was so weak. My daughter, on knowing the fact, decided to call off the marriage,” the bride’s father Arjun Singh said.

The bride’s family demanded the groom to return the cash and motorcycle given as dowry along with other expenses incurred due to the wedding.

The bride’s family eventually filed an FIR after the groom’s family refused the demands.
