Use social media for public service: Odisha CM

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday urged the government officials to be active on social media and learn how to use it for the welfare of citizens.

“I urge you all to be proactive in leveraging the power of social media for the welfare of the citizens of our state by reaching out to them, informing them about our programmes and works, listening to their issues and problems, and taking immediate action to resolve them as fast as possible,” Patnaik said while addressing a workshop on Delivery of Public Services through Social Media in association with Facebook.

He hoped that it would be immensely beneficial for the government departments to get a grip on social media and learn how to channelise it more effectively in governance issues.

“I consider social media as a vital medium to galvanise the 3Ts — Technology, Teamwork and Transparency, enunciated by my government for citizen-centric governance,” he added.

Expressing his happiness that government departments and agencies have opened social media accounts and are becoming active on the platforms, Patnaik said the government has entered into a new era of open, accountable and responsive governance.

“My government has begun engaging with the public on development issues, welfare measures and citizen-centric public service delivery using social media. From information dissemination to redressing grievances, we have completely adopted social media as a go-to platform for instant action,” he said.

“Every department of Odisha government along with district collectors has Facebook and Twitter accounts. Besides, we are communicating very effectively using Whatsapp groups at any crisis situation,” said Aditya Prasad Padhi, Chief Secretary.

Following the wide reach of social media and the growing digital connectivity, we hope it will be a very good tool to deal with any critical situation, he added.

“Any public service needed can be posted on social media in advance. The Chief Minister has also asked to use 3Ts –Teamwork Transparency and Technology in delivering public service. If we have to use technology, then we must have to use social media,” said Nitin Saluja, Facebook official. (with IANS inputs)
