UTP death: Odisha rights body seeks report in 2 weeks

Sambalpur: A day after the death of an undertrial prisoner (UTP) while undergoing treatment at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla in Sambalpur district, Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today directed the Human Rights Protection Cell ADG to submit report of the custodial death in two weeks.

OHRC also directed VIMSAR authorities to submit post mortem report of the deceased prisoner.

Notably, an undertrial prisoner identified as Abhed Singh had died yesterday at VIMSAR while undergoing treatment.

The incident had occurred under Jujumura police limits in the district.

Abhed was arrested on charges of illegal ganja trafficking.

Though the cause of the death is yet to be ascertained, his family members have alleged police excesses behind his death.
