Vandalization of chulhas at Jagannatha Temple: Puri Police detains suspect

Puri: The District Police has detained a person who is suspected to be involved in vandalizing over 40 wood-fired earthen ovens (chulhas) inside the Shri Jagannatha Temple’s Rosaghara.

Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh informed in a tweet the suspect has been identified with the help of footage of CCTVs installed inside the 12th century shrine. He further stated the suspect has been detained in the evening and further interrogation is going on.

The SP also issued a picture of the suspect whose face has been hidden.

Yesterday, Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra and DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal visited the 12th century shrine to review the situation.

Mahapatra had told media persons that the miscreant has been identified from the footage of CCTVs installed inside the temple and will be nabbed soon.

He further stated one person had vandalized the Rosaghara earthen ovens in the night of Saturday.

A complaint was also lodged with the Singhdwara Police in connection with the vandalisation of the earthen ovens. The case was registered under Sections 427 and 295A of IPC and Section 30 (A) (B) of SJTA Act.

In the evening on April 2, over 40 Chulhas were found vandalized after preparation of food for evening rituals.
