Malkangiri: Couple of days after an alleged unwanted vasectomy was performed on an unmarried tribal youth of Ambaguda village in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, his family members have lodged a complaint in this regard against an ASHA worker at the Mathili police station.

According to reports, vasectomy was slated to be carried out on one Gangaram Durua of Kosarbata village. However, he later refused to undergo the operation, following which it was performed on Ganga Durua, a dumb, of Ambaguda without his knowledge at Mathili Sub-divisional Hospital on August 3.

Following the operation, Ganga was given some medicines and Rs 2000.

Shockingly, his marital status was mentioned as married in the operation-related document, a source said.

It is being alleged that the vasectomy was done by the concerned Health Department staffers without his knowledge in order to increase the number of vasectomies in the area.

As the matter came to fore, locals demanded stringent against the accused staffers.

“The operation was carried out on the basis of an ASHA worker’s report. His mother was present at the healthcare facility during the operation. I have ordered the concerned authorities to carry out an investigation into the incident,” said Dr. Prafulla Nanda, CDMO, Malkangiri.
