Veteran Odisha actor-director Govind Tej passes away

Veteran actor and film director Govind Tej passed away this morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Odisha capital. He was 88.

Tej, who started his acting career with the movie ‘Kedar Gouri’, showcased his talent in films like ‘Bandhan’, ‘Krushna Sudama’, ‘Dharitri’, ‘Bandhu Mohanty’, ‘Mana Akasha’, ‘Gouri’ and ‘Schoolmaster’.

He directed five Odia movies– ‘Ramayan’, ‘Kaveri’, ‘Schoolmaster’, ‘Tunda Baida’ and ‘Gare Sindura Dhare Luha’– and got State Film Award for Best Director for the last four ones.

In 1977, he received the Odisha State Film Award for Best Actor for the movie ‘Bandhu Mohanty’.

Tej was conferred with the prestigious Jaydev Award in 1986 for his lifelong contribution towards Odia cinema.

Culture Minister Ashok Panda, former Speaker of Odisha Assembly Sarat Kar, musician Prafulla Kar and several eminent personalities reached his residence to offer their last tributes to the departed soul.
