Village in Odisha renamed after popular Sambalpuri song ‘Rangabati’

Bhubaneswar: Recognizing the popularity of the famous Sambalpuri song ‘Rangabati’, Odisha Government today renamed its lyricist Mitrabhanu Gauntia’s native village  Bilung as Rangabati Bilung.

On obtaining No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Science and Technology,  the Odisha Government renamed Bilung under Bamra Tehsil in Sambalpur district as ‘Rangabati Bilung’ with effect from July 22, said a notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.

“All rules, instructions in force in this regard shall be amended accordingly by the concerned competent authorities,” the notification reads.

Worth mentioning, the 77-year-old lyricist was conferred with Padma Shri award, the fourth highest civilian honour of the country,  this year. Earlier in 2017, its singer Jitendra Haripal was conferred with the award.

Gauntia has also received Odisha State Sangeet Natak Academy Award and  Akashvani National Award for music.
