Dhenkanal: Instances of poor healthcare services and medical negligence continue to surface in the state, especially in rural areas, with an on-duty doctor found sleeping allegedly in inebriated condition at a Government-run hospital in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
The incident came to fore after videos of the incident occurred at Sriramchandrapur Community Health Centre (CHC) in Gandia Tehsil of Dhenkanal district went viral on social media.
In the video, on-duty doctor, Abanikant Sahu, can be seen in deep sleep on his seat. As some patients waited outside for a while, a security guard of the hospital went inside and tried to wake him up. As the guard failed to bring the medico into consciousness, one of his colleagues intervened.
It is alleged that the doctor had fallen in deep sleep under the influence of alcohol. However, the doctor concerned could not be contacted to comment on the matter.
When asked, Dhenkanal Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Sujatarani Mishra said an inquiry into the incident has been ordered and action will be taken if the allegation is proved to be true. Besides, a notice will be served to authorities of all hospitals in the district to make sure that doctors are not drunk while discharging their duties.
