[Watch] Odisha villagers join hands to rescue elephant from well

Sundergarh:  In a heart-warming  incident, residents of Birtola village under Badgaon Forest Range in Sundergarh district were a cheerful lot as they succeeded in rescuing an elephant from a slush-filled well  in the locality following  a five-hour operation.

Reportedly,  a herd of 18 pachyderms had strayed into Birtola village in search of food late last night.  On their way back to the forest, one of tuskers fell into a mud-filled well and got stuck in it. Early this morning, a few villagers spotted the elephant trying to get out of the well and immediately raised an alarm.

Soon after, forest officials from Badgaon and fire personnel from Kutra rushed to  the spot to rescue the elephant. In the meantime, hundreds of villagers  reached the place and joined hands to help the officials in the rescue operation. Since the well was filled with mud following heavy rain, it took them around five hours to get the pachyderm out of it with the help of huge belts.

In a video of the rescue operation, the villagers  were seen cheerful after the elephant came out of the muddy well and went back into forest.
