Chikiti: The carcass of a whale shark was recovered at the Sunapur beach of Ganjam district today evening. Local fishermen who initially spotted the whale shark carcass said the fish was 20-25 feet long and weighed around 10 quintals.

Some youths spotted a whale shark at the beach in critical condition at around 4 pm today. With the help of local fishermen, the youths pushed the whale shark into the deep sea. But at 7 pm the whale shark carcass was found on the shore.

After receiving information, Forest department personnel reached the spot and took the whale shark carcass into their custody.

Ganjam DFO Amlan Kumar Das said post mortem of the carcass will be carried out tomorrow.

On February 19, a whale shark was caught in the fishing net on Gopalpur beach in Ganjam. Later local fishermen took the whale shark and released it in deep sea.
