A herd of 20-22 wild elephants have wreaked havoc in Ghodabandhuni village under Kuchinda block in Odisha's Sambalpur district.

The herd of pachyderms have destroyed houses and damaged standing vegetable crops, forcing some villagers to spend nights under the open sky.

Local people said they have been rendered penniless after their crops and houses were destroyed by these jumbos.

However, no human casualty has been reported.

An official of the Jamankira Forest division who was in the village to assess the damages caused by the wild herd, said the people will be compensated for their losses in accordance with the government rules.
