Around 1200 foreign birds of nine species, including the Siberian lapwing bird and heron were sighted by the officials this year in various Koraput water bodies.

These birds had arrived in the beginning of November. Since the birds are coming from far off areas, they are unable to return back home, the forest officials said.

Nalco Red mud pond, Dongri and Jogimaliguda areas have 900 migratory birds, they added.

The extreme cold is the reason for less number of migratory birds coming to Koraput, the forest officials added.
