Woman delivers in hospital verandah due to absence of staff in Odisha’s Rayagada

The incident, which was reported from Tikiri under Kashipur block, has sparked outrage among locals as they continue to be deprived of basic amenities like timely healthcare in case of emergencies.

Kashipur: Raising serious posers on the state of affairs in healthcare delivery in Odisha’s tribal-dominated Rayagada district, a woman had to deliver in the verandah of a primary health centre (PHC) as hospital staff were reportedly absent here today.

The incident, which was reported from Tikiri under Kashipur block, has sparked outrage among locals as they continue to be deprived of basic amenities like timely healthcare in case of emergencies.

Sources said the woman, Namita Khara of Pahandi village under Podapadi panchayat, developed labour pain at around 7.30 am. Family members rushed her immediately to Tikiri PHC only to find that there was no hospital staff present at the facility. While they waited helplessly, Namita’s water broke and she delivered in the verandah.

As she delivered a premature baby and that too under extremely unsafe and unhygenic conditions, family members alleged that the lack of timely healthcare was due to poor coordination between the doctors and the staff. This, they claimed, is unacceptable as lack of timely response puts many lives at risk.

Following the incident, villagers staged an agitation and demanded that the Health department direct an investigation into the matter and take immediate action against those guilty of negligence of duty.
