Woman devotee injured in cop attack inside Jagannath temple

Puri: A woman devotee sustained injuries after she was allegedly assaulted by a policeman inside the Jagannath temple during Nabajoubana darshan in Odisha’s Puri today.

The woman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, has been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital here as she sustained minor injuries on her face.

As per the available information, the cop allegedly attacked the woman near Bhitarakatha of the 12th Century shrine this evening. “The police attacked me while I was trying to get a glimpse of the Lord Jagannath,” she alleged.

No formal complaint has been lodged with the police so far in this connection.

Meanwhile, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) and Singhadwara police haven’t commented on the matter.

Worth mentioning here that lakhs of devotees thronged the Holy Town earlier in the day to seek blessings of the Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra during their Nabajoubana besha.

The world famous Rath Yatra of the deities will be held on July 4 (Thursday).
