Woman dragged out of home, thrashed for opposing kangaroo court order in Odisha

Nayagarh: In a strange and shocking incident, a woman was allegedly dragged out of her home thrashed mercilessly at a village in Odisha’s Nayagarh district today after she denied to accept theft charges levelled against her by a Kangaroo court.

The incident took place at Udaypur village under Sadar police limits in the district.

The victim has lodged a police complaint in this regard but no has been arrested so far. The matter is under investigation.

As per complaint, one Bhagban of the same village alleged that some miscreants had looted valuables and gold ornaments, among other items worth several lakhs from his house three days ago. He informed this to his fellow villagers and instead of approaching police the villagers knocked the door of a local tantric to nab the thieves.

Following this, the tantric used a cot know the whereabouts of the the culprits and, after two days, the cot, according to locals and tantric, stopped and didn’t move in the house of the woman, who happens to be the sister-in-law of the complainant. As a result, the tantric and the villagers unanimously declared the woman is the culprit.

In order to settle the case, the local residents called for a village court and asked the woman to pay Rs 1.4 lakh to the complainant. When she and her husband refused to pay, the villagers went on thrashing the woman inhumanly. She has been admitted to a nearby hospital.

On the basis of the complaint by the victim, a case was registered at Sadar Police station and investigation is underway.
