Woman gangraped before husband and son in Odisha’s Puri, main accused held

Brahmagiri: A woman was allegedly gangraped in front of her husband and minor son in a village under Arakhakuda Marine police limits and Krushnaprasad block in Puri district, last night. Acting on an FIR lodged in this regard, police today arrested the key accused and launched a detailed probe.

Another person involved in the crime is absconding and a manhunt has been launched to nab him.

According to a police source, the 25-year-old gangrape survivor’s husband and his two friends (who are accused in the case) consumed alcohol at a place near Chilika Lake as the trio often consumes alcohol together at night. The woman later tried to refrain her husband from doing so and quarreled with the accused duo. This act of the woman irked the accused and triggered their anger to take revenge.

In a fit of rage, the accused duo tied the woman’s husband to a pole and drove her minor son away. Even to the extent, the accused forcibly made the woman consume alcohol and gangraped her.

Based on the FIR, Arakhakuda Marine police registered a case (No-9/2024) under Section 376 of the DPI Act and arrested the key accused identified as 40-year-old Bulu, who hails from Nuapada village. Medical examinations of both the gangrape survivor and the prime accused were done following the arrest.

“Accused Bulu will be forwarded to a local court later in the day,” IIC Sasmita Behera informed.
