Woman hacked to death by neighbour over suspicion of practicing witchcraft in Odisha’s Rayagada

Rayagada: A woman was hacked to death by one of her neighbours in Koilapada area of Rayagada town in Odisha over suspicion of practicing witchcraft today.

The deceased has been identified as Chandrama Bibhar (55), said the police.

Accused Rajesh Kulesika has been arrested and an axe used in the crime has also been seized, they added.

Rajesh was under impression that Chandrama had been practicing witchcraft for last several days. An argument ensued between the two families over the issue a few days ago.

Angered over the argument, Rajesh attacked Chandrama with an axe while she was at her home today afternoon. She sustained grievous injuries on her neck and died on the spot. The accused also tried to frighten the villagers who gathered at the spot after they came to know about the incident, sources said.

On being informed, Rayagada SP Vivekanand Sharma and SDPO Dibyajyoti Das reached Koilapada and took stock of the situation.

“We are probing the incident after arresting the accused,” said a police officer.
