Woman jumps into canal with baby in Odisha capital

A woman along with her one-year-old baby girl today jumped into the Puri Canal near Balianta on the outskirts of Odisha capital.

As per reports, a distressed woman holding her baby jumped into the running waters near Balianta siphon on Puri Canal, about 200 meters from the National Highway-5.

While the woman was rescued by some locals who saw her while attempting suicide, the toddler was untraced till the time of filing the this report.

The locals dialled 108 ambulance service and rushed the woman to the Capital Hospital here. The fire services officials were also pressed into service to rescue the missing child. However, the minor remained untraced even after over three hours of frantic search to locate the kid.

The woman identified as Subhashree Patnaik had a strained relationship with her husband Satyajit Mohanty over family dispute.

According to the husband of the woman, they had a quarrel over a tivial issue last night. When he did not find his wife and child at home this morning, he presumed that they might have gone to the nearby temple as it was their daughter’s first birthday today.

After a while, he received a call from Pahala police outpost under Balianta police station limits asking him to rush to the station immediately. After arriving there, he came to know about the incident.

As per reports, the woman and her husband are employees of Union Home Ministry and are currently posted at Choudwar. The couple got married in June 2013 and were blessed with a baby girl on October 27 last year.

Meanwhile, police have begun investigation into the incident.

Till last reports came in, the woman was recovering well and regained consciousness.
