Woman killed in elephant attack in Odisha’s Sundargarh

Sundargarh: A married woman was killed in elephant attack in Badgaon area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district Sunday night.

The deceased has been identified as Kasturi Nayak (35), wife of Rama Chandra Nayak, of Jharmunda, sources said.

According to sources, a herd of 18 elephants from a forest in neighbouring Jharkhand had strayed into Badgaon area around a month ago. While 17 elephants from the herd moved towards Bamra forest range around 15 days ago, a tusker remained inside a forest near Jarangloi.

The tusker has been unleashing a reign of terror in Jarangloi-Jharmunda locality for last few days, sources said.

According to villagers, the tusker damaged Ram Chandra’s mud-thatched house Sunday night. The pachyderm attacked Kasturi while the couple was fleeing their damaged house.

While Kasturi died on the spot, Ram Chandra fell unconscious after watching the horrific scene, villagers said.

A few locals rescued Ram Chandra and rushed him to a hospital in Badgaon. His condition is stated to be stable.

On being informed, Forest department officials reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem.
